I am not so sure that I would say that a "dark empath" is a psychopath who possesses empathy, simply due to the fact that the clinical definition of a psychopathy is a condition characterized by apathy and the blunting of other affective states. I do believe there are people who possess empathy but also higher than standard psychopathic tendencies.
Great viewpoint. Do you think that there is a psychological assessment that could measure true psychopathic traits? Or true levels of real empathy? Individual diagnosed as psychopaths tend to lack empathy. Do you think this is by choice?
Interesting read. The dark empath has enough empathy that according to the article it "limits the level of aggression" from the empath yet at the same time the article concedes that this type of empath may be "more dangerous, cold, and unfeeling." I feel as though we may need more studies on this particular topic to really pinpoint the dark empaths traits and characteristics.
This is actually a very scary thing to read, it makes me think about some of the awful people in the world including serial killers, psychopaths, child molesters, etc. and how this trait can be used in a very evil way. Scary thoughts...
I think it's amazing how things we are learning about in Psychology are popping up in my everyday life. Were they always there and I'm just now seeing them? Or maybe I'm finding them more and more as becoming things I place around myself?
I disagree with calling this a new personality trait. Google definition of empathy:
NOUN the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. synonyms: compassion · sympathy · pity · feeling · concern · considerateness · consideration · tenderness · tender-heartedness · kindness · kind-heartedness · sensitivity · insight · fellow feeling · brotherly love · neighborliness · decency · humanity · [more]
Some of my favorite synonyms is brotherly love, tender-heartedness.... I do not believe you can have empathy and then turn that around to use against a person or manipulate them. I call this a con-artist.
I'm with you on this. This was my first reaction as well. This article/blog is delving an extra step into what people simply call "manipulative," and people have been manipulative since the beginning of time. My interpretation of empathy is not just the ability to understand the feelings of others, but to literally feel those feelings with another person, and experience another's pain or triumph with them. I don't think what is being described here is empathy, it is just the ability to analyze what another person is feeling, subjectively understand why, and manipulate those feelings into something beneficial for one's self.
This was such a good read, and it confirms slightly what I've always thought. Most people have a good and bad side, together, and that may not be all bad. It may honestly be more of a norm than others think. Exposing the bad traits isn't as socially fun. If we can experience multiple emotions at one time, what limits in in predicaments like these?
To me if made since the dark empath would have the ability to understand the emotion their victim is feeling . This would make it easy to manipulate them. However, I wonder if this is due to them having experience the trauma and it corrupting the dark empath?
This read made sense. I can see how a "dark empath" can be a mass manipulator to gain the trust of whatever person they have of interest. Also, how they can be more dangerous in the long run due to the appearance of a "solid" relationship.

ReplyDeleteI agree with you 100%. More research is needed to truly mark this as a specific characteristics trait as far as diagnosis is concerned.

ReplyDeleteI think this is a great idea! I think putting both together will only come with good results.
