Mental Illness

Are we born with a mental illness(biological) or is it environmental?

  1. There is no simple answer as to whether mental illness is innate or caused by the environment. Both biology and life experiences likely interact in complex ways to influence mental health. Some research suggests that certain mental illnesses like schizophrenia and bipolar disorder have a genetic component, indicating a possible innate or inherited risk. However, genetics alone do not determine if someone will develop a disorder. Environmental triggers and stressors also play an important role by activating or influencing genetic predispositions. Experiences like trauma, abuse, isolation and poverty have been linked to higher risks of depression, anxiety and other mental health issues. In most cases, it is likely a combination of biological, genetic and environmental factors that determine an individual's mental health and whether they develop a disorder. More research is still needed to better understand the causes of specific mental illnesses.
