This is such a fascinating topic! I think that there is a lot that can be gleamed from studying magic tricks. Why do they work? How do they work? How are the achieved and what that says about the person watching it and believing it? I think that some of the most basic magic things like illusion or conjuring magic stemmed from concepts that we recognize in psychology. I think that some of these tricks, also give us a sense of aw and wonder that we have as children because it plays with operational thought. Some illusions are done so skillfully that we almost enter pre-operational thought and we see things that are manipulated to look longer than they are, or shorter than they are, we also go back to discovering object permanence, things that the objects we see continue to exist even when they are obscured from view. So, like the woman who steps into the box and the box is sawed... we saw her step into the box so because we know things can exist even when they aren't seen when they saw the box in half we worry because we saw the woman step into the box.
All in all I think it really goes back to how dependent we are visually on things existing and laws of nature. When things seem obscured or illusions manipulate that it is a thrilling experience.
